3 Ways Conscious Writing Puts You in Touch with Your True Self

Conscious Writing is a holistic approach to creative awakening which leads you to discover your true self and express your true voice – on the page and in the world.

You don’t need to have aspirations of authorship to benefit from the principles and practice of this tried and tested process.

If you feel an impulse to reconnect with who you truly are, discover your true calling in life, and express yourself authentically when you communicate with your family, friends and colleagues, this practical teaching will show you how.

The Essence of Who You Are

Your true self is the essence of who you are and your natural state of being. Yet accessing it isn’t as straightforward as you might imagine.

The reason for this is that we've all been taught, to a greater or lesser degree, how we should be in order to meet the expectations of others - parents, teachers and the other figures of authority in your world.

Up to a point, this is fine. But when this conditioning completely overrules your authentic truth, you end up living a life you think you ought to live. Then one day, a major life event stops you in your tracks and you wonder why you’re not feeling happy and fulfilled.

Begin with Inner Preparation

The first step in Conscious Writing is to prioritize inner preparation before taking outer action. This is how to reach beyond the conditioning of your everyday self to become conscious, mindful of being fully present in the moment and with all aspects of yourself in alignment. As a result, the way is opened to access the deep inner truth of who you really are.

Here are three core principles (from a total of seven) that serve as effective ways to put you in touch with your true self:

1. Presence draws you into the Now where you explore the infinite potential of awareness beyond the mind.

Dive In: take at least 5 minutes every day to close your eyes and focus your attention on your breathing. This simple yet timeless technique gradually brings your everyday mind to stillness and reveals your essential nature.

2. Alignment affirms that when you reach beyond head and heart to include body and soul you access the deepest levels of conscious and creative flow.

Dive In: bring all aspects of yourself into alignment through energizing your physical body with conscious movement (walking, yoga); opening positive emotions (joy, gratitude) through remembering occasions when you felt those feelings; clearing space in your mind through observing the spaces between your thoughts; and connecting with greater awareness beyond your everyday self by immersing yourself in nature.

3. Authenticity lines up your inner true self with your outer everyday self and creates space for your authentic voice to be discovered and expressed.

Dive In: reflect and write in your journal on the following question, ‘What makes my heart truly sing?’ Follow your explorations all the way in to the deepest levels of what feels completely congruent in your heart of hearts.

Ultimately, connection to the essential spark of your true self will become your default setting, and your everyday self will fulfil its intended role as the vehicle through which you express yourself consciously and creatively in the world.
