Inspiring Creativity: 3 Apps that Plow Through Writer’s Block

We all get stuck sometimes. Creativity eludes us. Maybe you sat down to start writing the next chapter of your manuscript and realized you had nothing to say. If you haven’t heard Elizabeth Gilbert’s Ted Talk about creative genius, I encourage you to check it out. You’ll find it embedded at the bottom of this post. In that talk, Gilbert discusses her need to show up every day whether the muse appears or not. Certainly just showing up is important, but what if you show up and you really can’t find any words rattling around your brain that you can put to paper? Here are three iOS apps I use to draw the muses to come out to play.

Beautiful Tarot – Tarot cards are not just for reading fortunes. The images on the cards can be used as sources of inspiration and creativity. Pull a few cards from the beautifully illustrated deck and ponder. What is that woman on the card thinking? Who do the images remind you of? Is there a time or place that comes to mind when you look at them? How do the images make you feel?

Writing Prompts – Writing Prompts by is one of my favorite go to apps. Shake, swipe, or tap for a new prompt ranging from a series of words to headlines. Use the prompts as is or mix and match them to suit your needs. Embellish headlines. Select scenes. Read texts. Use all of it as fodder for your writing fire.

Brainstormer – The Brainstormer app offers a Classic Brainstormer and a Creature Builder for free with three other builders (Character Builder, World Builder, and Sci-Fi Brainstormer) as in-app purchases. Spin the wheels to combine different characteristics. So, what would a Parasitic Iguana Tarantula look like and how would it move? What would it eat?

These are just a few apps to help you get over any writing hump you may be stuck on top of right now. Ultimately, Elizabeth Gilbert’s experience is probably like most of ours. We show up day after day and hope muse chooses to join us.
“…I just lifted my face up from the manuscript and I directed my comments to an empty corner of the room. And I said aloud, "Listen you, thing, you and I both know that if this book isn't brilliant that is not entirely my fault, right? Because you can see that I am putting everything I have into this, I don't have any more than this. If you want it to be better, you've got to show up and do your part of the deal. But if you don't do that, you know what, the hell with it. I'm going to keep writing anyway because that's my job. And I would please like the record to reflect today that I showed up for my part of the job.”
